Because Indian Matchmaking follows matchmaker Sima Taparia analysing families and boys and girls to find suitable matches. In an age when people believed to be largely pushing away the stereotypes, breaking free from the regressive patriarchal mind-set of society, this show throws light on the ugly truth of Indian matchmaking. In other words, it hits the bullseye when showcasing the circus that Indian marriages, mostly considering how even the most well-to-do families can’t still avoid checking the kundali, complexion or height among other conventional criteria.
But it simultaneously hurts because it is the reality that people face once in their lifetimes and want to forget. Sima Taparia, who has been a matchmaker since , finds nothing backward in her business. In India anyway, 50 percent are love marriages but people mostly want arranged ones, as those marriages last long. No matter how much the show makes one twitch, the truth is that a large population of Indians still opt for an arranged marriage.
Despite Twitter rants on the show, calling it out for promoting colourism, cast and beauty standards, Indian Matchmaking elucidates the reality of Indian household loud and clear on the screen.
Netflix new series ‘Indian Matchmaking‘ Photograph: Twitter. The real game in India is way more convoluted, painstaking and disrespectful to human emotion — especially for girls. It’s a haggling of virtues and vices, and is decided by horoscopes and pre-decided norms for both genders.

The new Netflix series “Indian Matchmaking” brings to light an ancient tradition that is still going on today. Binge-watching and hate-watching go hand in hand, and so it’s been with Netflix’s ” Indian Matchmaking. There’s Aparna, who needs her future husband to know Bolivia has salt flats; Vyasar, who carries a secret about his father trying to kill his third wife; and Pradhyuman, who concocts elaborate recipes such as peri-peri foxnuts with liquid nitrogen. These Indian singles, they’re not just like us. But Sima Auntie, as she is known, is in the business of marrying them off anyway, guided by a “biodata” page of likes, dislikes, educational background and a photo.
That’s hardly the most offensive part. Despite trending on every social platform and the streaming service all week, the series has been criticized for perpetuating harmful stereotypes, colorism , sexism , elitism , heteronormativity , the caste system and the shallow , transactional nature of Indians looking for a life partner. I’m ready to wade into the debate. Hang on, muting my mentions on Twitter As someone who has spent her whole life as an Indian, much of her career chronicling the country and its diaspora , and written two books on global Indians, I think the criticism is misplaced.
I fear that the art of nuance and subtlety has been lost on critics. They want a deeper discussion of the rampant colorism on display here the word “fair” to refer to skin tone is used over and over, without second thought.

In the first episode, Taparia lays out the sociological context of the show for a Western audience: Arranged marriages are the norm in Indian society.
A marriage is a union between two families, not just the bride and groom. Families are heavily involved in the process. Even as matchmakers and families rarely bend on the caste, color, or status of prospective matches, they expect young women to let go of the few things that matter to them. My heart broke as I watched a supposedly progressive matchmaker warn Bansal, an entrepreneur with her own clothing line, that she should be ready to give up her career and relocate if her husband demanded it.
In the arranged marriage process, strong independent women are expected to relinquish so much that their identities are reduced to nothing. I cringed when I heard that. These three words, the bedrocks of patriarchal society, were repeatedly peddled through the show.

The Mumbai-based matchmaker Sima Taparia delivers this meme-friendly one-liner in the seventh episode of the hit Netflix series Indian Matchmaking. But she departs from this well-worn model in her attention to one extra characteristic: caste. This silent shadow hangs over every luxurious living room she leads viewers into. She lumps an entire social system, which assigns people to a fixed place in a hierarchy from birth, together with anodyne physical preferences.
This prejudiced treatment includes, but is hardly limited to, workplace discrimination in the United States. For example, the state of California sued the tech company Cisco in June for allegedly failing to protect a Dalit employee from discrimination by his higher-caste Brahmin managers. When a popular show like Indian Matchmaking neglects this alarming fact of the Indian American experience, it quietly normalizes caste for a global audience.
Contrary to what some viewers might think, the caste system is an active form of discrimination that persists in India and within the Indian American diaspora. One of the primary functions of arranged marriage is maintaining this status quo. That explains why people in dominant castes often carry out brutal violence against their own family members who dare to marry outside their caste, particularly if a partner is Dalit.
Last year, in Maharashtra, a father reportedly doused his daughter and her Dalit husband in kerosene and lit them on fire to condemn their intercaste marriage. These attacks are part of a pattern of families punishing relatives for rejecting marriages arranged on the basis of caste. Multiple episodes open with When Harry Met Sally —esque interviews featuring mostly older, straight couples in seemingly happy arranged marriages.

It has been a few months into trying out the prospect of arranged marriage. The decision came with the desire to find a decent, understanding companion I could share my life with. At the outset, let me tell you the process of finding a suitable match in this structure requires a considerable investment of time and energy.
So after much deliberation, I finally decided to take the plunge. As an independent, working woman of today, why did I choose to do this? Not because of a lack of faith in the ability to fall in love organically but an inkling that perhaps sometimes love is not just enough. The structure of arranged marriage, on the contrary, was allowing me to pick and choose the man who suited my criteria — including emotional intelligence — and help me eliminate apparent risks in a relationship like any toxicity that sometimes go unnoticed, ignored or encountered later in an otherwise organic romantic bond.
This, of course, does not go to suggest that an arranged marriage would turn out to be risk-free, but an early red flag gives you the chance to opt out of the match without any baggage. Perhaps the fact that we see progressive and successful men and women of today as shown in the series still going ahead with the set-up challenges the argument in a way. And we millennials are familiar with such people or are trying out the option ourselves, whether we want to admit it or not.
